The Resource Management Division provides garbage, recycling, and composting programs via a residential curbside collections program, drop-off recycling locations, and a variety of services offered at the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center.

These services are available to residents and businesses within Johnson County, Kalona, and Riverside. Materials from outside of this service area are not accepted.

Residential Curbside Collections of garbage, recycling, and composting (available to Iowa City residents living in single-family homes up to 4-unit buildings)
Drop-off Recycling Locations for a variety of materials
Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center includes the landfill, recycling programs, Compost Facility, and the Hazardous Material Collection Facility.

Residential Curbside Collections

Curbside garbage, recycling, and composting services are available for single-family homes up to 4-unit multifamily buildings.

Monthly fees per curbside service:

Garbage: $14
Recycling: $7.50
Composting/Organics: $3.50

Collections normally operate Monday through Friday. Operations may be impacted on official City holidays or in events of severe weather. For more information, view the "Holiday Schedule" tab below.

Residents new to Iowa City must sign up for utilities, which include water and curbside collections. Billing is monthly.

Guides and Online Directories

Do you need translated guides or educational materials for a group or event? The Resource Management Division has a variety of outreach materials, and several digital and print-friendly documents translated into English, Spanish, French, and Arabic available at no cost.

Holiday Schedule

The following section provides information on schedules and potential closures on official City holidays for curbside collections and the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center.

Christmas (Monday, December 25 and Tuesday, December 26, 2023)
- Curbside Collections: no collection on Monday; Monday and Tuesday routes will be collected on Tuesday. Please have your carts to the curb by 7 a.m.
- Landfill: closed on Monday and open regular hours on Tuesday
New Year’s Day (Monday, January 1, 2024)
- Curbside Collections: no collection on Monday; Monday and Tuesday routes will be collected on Tuesday, January 2. Please have your carts to the curb by 7 a.m.
- Landfill: closed on Monday
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (Monday, January 15, 2024)
- Curbside Collections: normal operations
- Landfill: closed on Monday
